SPRINGFIELD — Police are investigating a weekend homicide after a 50-year-old stabbing victim has died.

Officers responding to a complaint of a fight early Sunday morning in a rear parking lot of a Worthington Street apartment found two stabbing victims, at least one of whom had been badly injured, Springfield Police Capt. Thomas Trites said.

Both men were taken to the hospital by ambulance where one died. The second, whose name or age was not released, is being treated at Baystate Medical Center and expected to survive, Trites said.

Police in the Detective Bureau have been investigating the slaying all day and blocked off the parking lot while searching for evidence, Police Sgt. John Delaney, aide to Police Commissioner William Fitchet said.

Police have not contacted family members of the man who was killed and have not released his name, Capt. Thomas Trites said.

The stabbings happened at about 4:55 a.m. Sunday behind 1083 Worthington St. Police are searching for the motive behind the slaying, Trites said.

“We are looking at several different avenues,” he said.

Those with information on the homicide, the city’s 18th this year, are urged to call the detective bureau at (413) 787-6355.
