Costello and a passenger were treated at Baystate Medical Center and released.

CHICOPEE -- A 51-year-old city woman who was allegedly behind the wheel of an SUV that struck a house on Prospect Street late Sunday night was arrested and charged with drunken driving (second offense), police said.

The suspect, Michele Costello, and a passenger, were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where they were treated and released, Lt. Richard Nunes said.

Those inside the home at 454 Prospect St., asleep at the time of the crash, were not injured, Nunes said.

The crash occurred shortly after 11:16 p.m. when Costello lost control of her small SUV, hit two guard rails and then the front of the house. “She hit the guard rail pretty good,” Nunes said. “The (SUV) broke apart.”

The SUV left a 600 foot trail of debris between the first guard rail and the house, Nunes said. The vehicle took out a chunk of the home’s foundation and the interior of the cellar was visible from the outside.

Costello was also charged with a marked lanes violation. Nunes declined to release her street address.
