A boat being towed by a pickup truck launched into the air after the truck collided with a car. The boat landed on both vehicles, police said.
BELCHERTOWN — Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash on Bay Road that seriously injured four people just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.
A 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup truck and a 1999 Audi sedan collided near the intersection of Bay Road and Stebbins Street, Belchertown Police Officer John Raymer said.
The pickup was towing a motorboat that "launched from the trailer on impact and came to rest on top of both vehicles," Raymer said.
The man driving the Silverado was trapped inside the truck, but a female passenger managed to escape before police and Belchertown firefighters arrived, Raymer said.
Both occupants of the Audi – a male and female – were trapped inside the car, he said.
All four victims sustained "serious injuries" and were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment, according to Raymer. Updates on their conditions were unavailable.
The crash closed a stretch of Bay Road for about 4 hours and forced authorities to reroute motorists onto Old Bay Road. Police and fire officials were assisted at the scene by ambulance personnel from Granby and Amherst.
The crash is being investigated by town police, the Massachusetts State Police
Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and troopers assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.
