The 24-year-old Chicopee man was arrested for resisting arrest and on a warrant for resisting arrest, according to police.
CHICOPEE — The city resident who fled from police by jumping into the Connecticut River Monday evening is set to be arraigned in Chicopee District Court Tuesday.
Nicholas Hebert, 24, who was wanted on a default warrant, ran from officers after they spotted him on Erline Street around 7 p.m. In addition to getting all wet, Hebert, who was plucked from the river about an hour later, picked up a charge of resisting arrest.
"He swam across and got to Holyoke and saw officers on that side, and he jumped back in and floated down the river," Chicopee Police Capt. Lonny Dakin said.
The Chicopee Fire Department launched a rescue boat and approached Hebert, who initially refused to accept a life jacket.
Police noted that Hebert's default warrant also was for a charge of resisting arrest. Hebert, whose last known city address was on Montville Street, has been arrested in the past by police in Holyoke and Chicopee.
