HOLYOKE -- Police arrested a Northampton man on gun charges after they say he was indiscriminately firing a handgun on High Street early Sunday morning, and then tried to draw the weapon on a police officer.

Lt. Michael Higgins said Xavier Edwardo Nazario, 21, of 241 Jackson St. in Northampton, was arrested on High Street in Holyoke just minutes after area residents called 911 to report shots being fired. Higgins said police began to get reports of the gunfire in the vicinity of 733 High St. at 6:03 Sunday morning.

Higgins said Officer James Parnell responded to the reports and was approaching the scene when he noticed a man walking on High Street near Jackson who fit the witness description. The officer stopped the suspect at gunpoint, and ordered him to the ground. Parnell reported that even as he held is service weapon on the suspect, Nazario allegedly tried to reach under his prone body to grab his chrome handgun in his waist band. Parnell wrestled the gun away from the suspect, Higgins said, and handcuffed him.

Once the suspect was secured, Parnell confiscated a chrome Liberty Arms .22 cal handgun.

Nazario is being held without right to bail pending arraignment in Holyoke District Court Monday. He is being charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resisting arrest and carrying a loaded firearm. Narzario is also the subject of two outstanding warrants from Springfield and Chicopee courts.

Police have no idea what prompted the shooting spree. No one was injured, Higgins said.
