WESTFIELD - Police are searching downtown streets for a suspect involved in the shooting of a man as part of an attempted robbery on Chapel Street, police said.
The shooting occurred at about 9:20 p.m. on Chapel Street near Mechanic Street, police said.
A man and a woman were walking down the street when they were accosted by an armed man who demanded their wallet and purse, police said.
A struggle ensued and the man was shot, according to police.
Police had no information on the extent of his injuries. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Police were not disclosing his name.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male dressed in black. He was armed with a silver handgun, police said.
Westfield police are searching the area along with K-9 units from the Massachusetts State Police and Southwick.
