SPRINGFIELD — The city's streets are about to look cleaner as the city deploys its first round of street sweeping for the year.
Salt from the winter, along with dirt and debris on the roadways, will begin to diminish starting on Monday as the Department of Public Works rolls out a brigade of four street sweepers.
Sweeping will take place over the next couple of months, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., with downtown being swept on Sunday nights.
While the sweeping operation does not bring with it any parking bans, the DPW encourages people to park their cars with care, as cars parked on the street unnecessarily, or cars parked poorly can diminish the effectiveness of the sweeping.
The DPW also reminds residents not to place their trash receptacles waiting for pick-up in the road. All trash cans should be placed on the tree belt, as opposed to in the gutter of the street. This tip is not exclusive to the sweeping operation; barrels should be kept out of the streets at all times, according to the DPW.
Sweeping will begin on main roadways first, and will move on to more residential areas as the project continues.
A schedule of the sweeping operation is available on the Springfield DPW website, and will be updated as the operation continues.
This round of sweeping is expected to come to a close by Memorial Day, but it will be followed by two more rounds in 2013 including one scheduled for mid-summer and another for early fall.
