While the people of Western Massachusetts were saying goodbye to 2011 and greeting 2012, the region's wildlife likely went about their business as if it were any other day, or night.
Michael Beswick, a staff photographer for The Republican, has video cameras set up near his Franklin County home, and on New Year's Eve, one of his infrared cameras captured a red fox munching on a snack in the woods. Beswick noted that the fox was "very healthy," unlike the last one he saw and photographed with his still camera – it "was FULL of mange and most likely didn't make it through the night," he said.
Beswick is keenly interested in wildlife and the outdoors, and the Pioneer Valley offers him an abundance of fauna and flora to capture on still and video images. Several amazing wildlife photos are included in his "Best of 2011" photo gallery:
