A fire in Springfield causes $50,000 in damage.
SPRINGFIELD — A fire at 98 Pendleton Ave. caused $50,000 in damage, said Dennis Leger, aide to Fire Commissioner Joseph Conant.
Firefighters were called to the one story ranch at 9:49 p.m. Saturday after an electric space heater cord caught fire.
"The woman living in the house was sitting on the couch when she heard a popping noise. She lifted a blanket and carpet and saw that the cord of the electric heater was on fire," Leger said.
The woman attempted to put water on the fire and then called the fire department.
Leger said electric cords should never be put under a carpet or blanket for a long period of time.
The woman and her husband were not injured, but they will be displaced for some time, Leger said.
