Meteorologists are predicting snowfall totals of six inches or more for the Pioneer Valley with CBS 3 Springfield forecasting closer to 10 inches of the white stuff in the north.

The media partner of MassLive.com and The Republican calls for a mix of snow and rain by Saturday afternoon with that mix changing to snow overnight and stopping on Sunday.

"Expect a wintry mix for a time Saturday evening in Hampden County with a period of freezing rain and sleet possible as well. This will hold totals down to four to six inches there," CBS 3 Springfield meteorologist Nick Morganelli said. "North of the Mount Holyoke range, expect eight to 10 inches of snow with the most in the hill towns and Berkshires where a foot of snow is not out of the question by Sunday midday especially in the eastern hill towns near Worcester County. The snow will be heavy and wet which may damage tree limbs and cause power outages by Sunday morning."

The National Weather Service issued a similar forecast, predicting in its Winter Storm Watch:

Snow will overspread the region Saturday afternoon. The heaviest snow will occur Saturday night into Sunday morning when one to two inch per hour snowfall rates will be possible. It's possible that the snow may briefly mix with rain for a time near and just south of the Massachusetts Turnpike. The snow should taper off to snow showers from west to east Sunday afternoon.
