Capt. Daniel Sullivan said a responding police officer narrowly missed getting shot as the suspect struggled with another officer in an attempt to get his service weapon.

The suspect, William T. Wright, of 22 Sackett St. in Westfield, faces numerous charges, including five counts of assault to murder while armed with a firearm.

Sullivan said police were summoned to 103 Madison St. at about 11:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Officers found two men, one 43, the other 20, suffering from gunshot wounds.

A short time later police found Wright in the area of 83 Madison St., Sullivan said. The suspect resisted arrest and attempt to gain control of a service weapon belonging to one of the officers.

“They were struggling for the gun and the officer’s gun went off, narrowly missing another officer,” Sullivan said.

The officer that was nearly shot was bitten during the struggle and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Sullivan said.

An undetermined amount of cash was taken during the home invasion and police recovered Wright’s firearm after his arrest.

Wright was also charged with home invasion while armed with a firearm, three counts of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resisting arrest and causing a disturbance while carrying a dangerous weapon.

Sullivan did not have any information on the condition of the victims. Abc40 reported, however, that the two victims were treated and released.
