LUDLOW – Schools will remain closed on Monday here because of concerns over road conditions and roof safety.

Superintendent of Schools Todd Gazda made the call on Sunday night.

"Although the Department of Public Works crews have worked very hard and done an excellent job, all sidewalks may not be clear for the morning which, when coupled with the high snow banks creates a dangerous situation for those students who walk to school," he said in an email statement sent to families.

The forecast calls for freezing rain and sleet on Monday morning, adding to safety concerns, he said.

"The extra day will also allow us to have a roofing company inspect our roofs to insure there are no structural problems due to the heavy snow load," Gazda said.

Some 20 inches of snow fell in Ludlow on Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.
