Donations towards this season's tally will be accepted at The Republican through 5 p.m. Friday.
SPRINGFIELD – Donations to Toy for Joy, which fell nearly $18,000 shy of its $150,000 Christmas Eve goal, will be accepted through Friday and added to this season’s total.
As of noon on Christmas Eve, the toy fund tallied to $132,057, leaving $17,942.70 to be raised over the next few days.
“Although we were not able to meet our goal on Christmas Day we are continuing to receive donations that will count to our total until Friday at 5 p.m.,” said Wayne E. Phaneuf, executive editor of The Republican.
“Several donation were delivered to our 1860 Main St. offices on Christmas Eve and we will be open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept last-minute contributions,” Phaneuf said.
The final list will be published in the Sunday Republican and will include donors who have contributed since Christmas Eve.
“We’d like to thank all those who have helped make this holiday a bit brighter for children in need,” Phaneuf said.
The toy fund, now celebrating its 91st year of providing smiles to Western Massachusetts children, is co-sponsored by the Salvation Army.
“It’s not too late to make a difference,” said Ronda Ferreira, co-commander of the Salvation Army’s Greater Springfield citadel. “Please consider making a tax deductible donation to our 2013 campaign. On behalf of the thousands of families who benefit from your generosity, we say ‘thank you.’”
