Police have not released much information about the shooting, which came several hours after a fatal shooting about a half-mile away.

SPRINGFIELD — Several hours after a man was shot dead near the corner of Union and Oak streets late Sunday morning, police were called to the scene of another shooting incident several blocks away on Maple Street, where a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police responded to 911 calls and a ShotSpotter report indicating multiple rounds of gunfire around 5:45 p.m. in the 100 block of Maple Street, which is about a half-mile west of Sunday's homicide location.

Investigators have not indicated if the Maple Street incident was linked to the fatal shooting at 513 Union St., where a 21-year-old man was found dead around 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Maple Street victim may have been shot in the leg, according to initial reports, but that information could not immediately be verified with authorities. Springfield Police Lt. Thomas A. Maccini said he had no update on the crime, which happened while investigators were still at the scene of the Union Street murder.

The unidentified man was alert and talking with police at the scene, according to CBS3 Springfield, media partner of MassLive/The Republican.

The precise location of the shooting was unavailable, but the 100 block of Maple Street stretches from near Union Street to around Central Street.
