HAMPDEN - A fire Friday night caused an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 damage to a home on North Monson Road, displacing the two residents, Fire Chief Michael Gorski said.

No one was injured in the fire, but the two residents will need to find temporary housing until their property can be repaired, he said.

The fire remains under investigation, but fire officials believe it was the result of a chimney fire by the wood stove, he said.

The two residents reported when they left their house at 5:15 p.m., the wood stove had been stoked and was burning, Gorski said. About 45 minutes later, a passerby called 911 to report seeing flames around the chimney.

When police arrived on the scene, they reported the fire was coming through the roof.

Gorski said Hampden firefighters, with assistance under mutual aid from Monson and Somers, Conn., knocked down the fire quickly and efficiently, but the building still suffered some structural damage.

The roof had a hole in it and the interior received heavy water damage, he said.

Gorsky said the residents said they would find a place to stay on their own and the Pioneer Valley chapter of the American Red Cross was not called.

The map below shows the approximate location of 185 North Monson Road:
