Firefighters battle Hampden house fire on North Monson Road

Firefighters from Hampden, with mutual aid from Monson and Somers, Conn., worked to put out a blaze at 185 North Hampden Road.

An update to this story was posted at 10:27 p.m. Friday.

HAMPDEN - A residence at 185 North Monson Road suffered heavy damage in a fire Friday evening.

No one was injured in the fire. Police at the scene said no one was home at the time.

The fire was reported just before 7 p.m.

Initially it was reported as a chimney fire, but by the time the first police arrived on scene, flames were coming through the roof, police said.

Hampden firefighters were assisted on the scene through mutual aid by firefighters in Monson and Somers, Conn.

The fire was out within 30 minutes, but firefighters were remained on scene for clean up. A large hole was visible in the roof near the chimney.

The Hampden Department of Public Works dispatched a sand truck to the scene to sand the road before it became too icy for firefighters.

At last report, the town building inspector was being called to the scene to determine if the house is habitable.
