CHICOPEE — Firefighters and other emergency personnel have been at City Hall since mid-morning attempting to discover the source of a petroleum-like odor there.
Mayor Michael Bissonnette, posting on Facebook.com, reported that the odor appears to be under the original City Hall building and that many old pipes, storage tanks and crawl spaces are located throughout the Market Square area.
Members of a regional hazardous materials team and the state Department of Environmental Protection were summoned to the scene.
Chicopee Deputy Fire Chief James McInerney told WWLP that firefighters were summoned to the building at about 10 a.m. after four employees of the clerk’s office complained that they were feeling nauseous and had headaches due to the odor.
