SPRINGFIELD -- City police closed a section of Cottage Street Thursday morning as they investigated an apparent hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle at Berkshire Avenue.

Police diverted traffic from Cottage Street onto Brookdale Drive as a Crime Scene Investigation photographer captured images of the scene on Berkshire Avenue, where a heavily damaged motorcycle, articles of clothing, and medical supplies lay in the roadway.

Traffic on Berkshire Avenue was reduced to one lane in each direction during the investigation.

Rufus Judge Kynard III of Springfield, who owns Chef Rufus' Full of Flavor Diner at the intersection of Cottage and Berkshire, said he heard the impact of the crash.

"Being on this corner for five years, I've heard this noise and I knew what it was," Kynard said. "So, I grabbed my phone, I ran out, and what I seen was the motorcycle on the ground, and the motorcyclist also on the ground."

Kynard said he called 911 to report the accident, which he described as a "hit-and-run". The motorcyclist was conscious, Kynard said, adding that he didn't see the second vehicle involved in the crash. Other witnesses described the second vehicle as a van or UHaul truck.

"The police did great. The police responded immediately, along with the ambulance people," Kynard said.

On Carew Street, police stopped a UHaul truck and the crime scene photographer, after leaving the Cottage Street scene, also photographed that vehicle. It was not immediately clear whether the two scenes were related.

The UHaul was eventually towed from Carew Street.

Information about the extent of the motorcyclist's injuries was not immediately available.

This is a developing story and it will be updated as more information becomes available.
