People are being told to avoid the area of the DuBois library and the Student Union
UPDATE: UMass just announced the gas line has been shut off and the perimeter has reopened. Normal activities may resume.
AMHERST - A gas leak was reported Thursday afternoon in an area of the University of Massachusetts campus near the DuBois Library, and students, faculty and staff are being urged to avoid the area, a campus spokesman said.
Crews with Baystate Gas are on the scene and are working to contain the leak, said Patrick Callahan of the UMass News Office.
He said it is not clear where the leak is but people are being asked to avoid the area of the library and the nearby Student Union.
Callahan said he did not know if either building was being evacuated.
The area between the library and the Student Union is part of an ongoing construction project, but Callahan said he is not certain if it had any bearing on the leak.
More information will be posted as it develops.
