HOLYOKE - Police charged a 41-year-old motorcyclist after he struck a police officer with his motorcycle in the south canal area of the city on Saturday night.

Police Lt. Manuel T. Reyes said officers were outside their cruiser at a motor vehicle stop when they saw Herman Gomez, of South Summer Street, allegedly speed past, traveling in excess of 100 mph and doing "wheelies."

Those officers alerted other patrolmen who pursued Gomez, but he failed to stop, Reyes said. Gomez again traveled in the direction of the officers who were at the motor vehicle stop and struck one; the impact threw Gomez off the motorcycle, Reyes said. Reyes said Gomez drove directly at the officers.

The officer who was hit - Lt. Michael McCoy - was taken to Holyoke Hospital for minor injuries, Reyes said. Gomez was charged with two counts of speeding and assault by means of a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and operating to endanger.

He was being held Saturday night and will be arraigned Tuesday in Holyoke District Court. The incident happened at approximately 6:45 p.m., police said.
