Police also filed charges against driver Moises Afonso, 81, of Ludlow
LUDLOW - Police have identified the elderly woman killed in a Wednesday morning accident on Highland Avenue and filed charges against the 81-year-old driver who ran her down, police said.
Sgt. Daniel Valadas said the woman has been identified as llda Goncalves, 85, of Ludlow. She died at Baystate Medical Center from injuries suffered in the 8:45 a.m. accident.
Concalves was on the sidewalk when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Moises Afonso, 81, also of Ludlow. Afonso had struck a parked car on Highland Avenue, then drove onto the sidewalk and hit Goncalves. The car dragged her for a short distance before hitting a pole.
Valadas said Ludlow police filed criminal charges against Afonso in District Court on Thursday. He is being charged with operating to endanger and failure to stay in marked lanes.
Ludlow police also filed a request with the Registry of Motor Vehicles for an immediate revocation of Afonso's driver's license, citing an immediate threat to the public. The request was granted and his license was revoked.
It is not clear with Afonso will appear in court on the charges. Valadas said he was being treated at Baystate on Thursday for injuries suffered in the accident.
Ludlow police, the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Hamdpen District Attorney's Office are still investigating the accident.
