HADLEY - A section of River Drive, or Route 47, in North Hadley was closed for about two hours Tuesday as Hadley and Sunderland firefighters responded to a leak of propane from an underground tank at a residence.

Firefighters were called to 267 River Drive for a report of propane escaping from an underground tank shortly after 6 p.m. A release valve for the tank was damaged and allows the gas to escape.

Hadley and Sunderland firefighters, under mutual aid, responded to the scene to vent the 1,000 gallon tank. Western Massachusetts Electric also dispatched crews to the scene to shut down electric power to several houses in the vicinity.

South Hadley Fire District 2 also dispatched firefighters to provide station coverage in Hadley.

Power was not restored until neighboring houses were checked for any lingering propane fumes.

Police blocked River Road between Stockbridge Street and Meadow Street.
