A Westfield man is in critical condition after he was struck by a car on Main Street.

WESTFIELD — A 58-year-old Westfield man remains in critical condition at the Baystate Medical Center after he was struck by a car on Main Street shortly before 9 p.m. Friday evening.

Westfield Police Sgt. Paul Beebe said the victim is a Main Street resident who was crossing the street from the south side of the four-lane roadway to his home on the north side. Beebe said a car in the inside lane stopped for the pedestrian but blocked the view for the car in the outside lane of eastbound traffic. The man walked into the outside lane and was struck.

Main Street is a heavily traveled main artery linking many parts of the city to its predominant commercial area.

The name of the victim is being withheld at this time, Beebe said. He was taken to the Springfield trauma unit by Westfield Fire Department ambulance where he was admitted in critical condition.

The driver of the car which struck the man remained at the scene and was interviewed by police. Beebe said the investigation will continue. .
