The City Council endorsed the plans to file an application for a cultural district with the Massachusetts Cultural Commission
SPRINGFIELD – The City Council voted to endorse plans for a proposed state-recognized cultural district in downtown Springfield, which allows to the city to move forward with an application to the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Councilor Kateri Walsh, the lead sponsor, said the cultural district if approved, will help draw more tourism to the city, foster new grant opportunities for the city’s cultural programs, help in preservation efforts and improve property values. Various cultural organizations including representatives of the Springfield Museums, attended the council meeting and applauded the unanimous vote.
The proposed cultural district would be bordered by East Columbus Avenue, Bliss Street, Stockbridge Street, High Street, Federal Street, Pearl Street, Dwight Street, Lyman Street, and Frank B. Murray Street, according to a prepared summary.
The application is expected to be submitted by Aug. 15, and would likely be considered by the Massachusetts Cultural Council at its October meeting, officials said.
