A man, whom police declined to identify, was stabbed after a dispute at 425 Eastern Ave., a duplex just west of Springfield College.

SPRINGFIELD — Police are investigating a Monday afternoon stabbing on Eastern Avenue that sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries.

The incident was reported shortly after 12 p.m. at 425 Eastern Ave., a duplex in the city's Old Hill neighborhood about two blocks west of Springfield College.

Officer Charles Youmans, a spokesman for Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet, said the man, whom police declined to identify, was stabbed after arguing with a group of men.

A news report claimed the victim was in stable condition at Baystate Medical Center, though an update on his condition was unavailable.

Police have not indicated if they have any suspects in the case. No arrests had been made as of early Tuesday morning, according to police Capt. Larry Brown.

Authorities have asked anyone with information to call the Springfield Police Detective Bureau at (413) 788-6355. Anonymous text-message tips may also be sent to CRIMES (or 274637). Tips must begin with word "solve," followed by the sender's message, according to police.

On Monday afternoon, detectives could be seen gathering evidence and interviewing people at the crime scene, located directly across from Melrose Street and next door to Temple of Praise, a church at 433 Eastern Ave.
