NORTHAMPTON — A jury was selected Monday in the Hampshire Superior Court trial of a Granby man charged in connection with a September 2011 fire that destroyed a home at 92 Chicopee St. in Granby.

Scott Szaban, 46, of 399 East State St., is also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and breaking and entering in the nighttime.

Opening arguments are slated for Tuesday morning.

When police went to his East Street home in February 2012 to arrest him on a warrant in connection with the fire, he was armed with what appeared to be a rifle equipped with a laser sight when officers arrived at about 8 p.m. At one point Szaban aimed the weapon, with the laser engaged, in the direction of the officers, according to a statement issued by Granby police at that time.

Szaban put the weapon down when the officers identified themselves and was arrested without further incident. The rifle was later determined to be a pellet gun.

The two-story home, which was built in 1875, was destroyed. Ted LaBorde and family owned the home, which was unoccupied and for sale at the time of the blaze.
