Three people were injured, one seriously, and two were arrested as a result of the bar fight at the Artery Lounge in North Adams.
NORTH ADAMS — A closing-time brawl at a Union Street bar spilled out onto the street and left two people with stab wounds, one serious, and a third with a head injury after being struck with a bottle.
Police said between 20 to 30 people became involved as the 1:50 a.m. Saturday fight at the Artery Lounge at 68 Union St. progressed.
North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio told the North Adams Transcript that the melee at the Artery Lounge resulted in three people being transported to the North Adams Regional Hospital. One stabbing victim was then transferred to the trauma unit of the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield with serious wounds.
Police arrested two men as they tried to flee the area, Cozzaglio said. Messiah Grandson, 21, of Boylston Street in Pittsfield and 21-year-old Brandon Green, of Myrtle Street in Pittsfield, were arrested in their car as they drove away from the scene of the fracas. Cozzaglio said units from the Williamstown and Adams police departments as well as Massachusetts State Police joined North Adams police in quelling the brawl, and looking for a suspicious vehicle seen leaving the area.
Grandson is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with the intent to commit murder. Green is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. They are being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail pending a Monday appearance in court. Cozzaglio said a third suspect is being sought for questioning.
City officials moved quickly to suspend the license of the Artery Lounge. Mayor Richard Alcombright said the bar's license was taken by 4 p.m. Saturday and will not be returned until after a License Commission hearing on the incident.
