The pedestrian claimed he was hit by a flying car part, said Dennis Leger, public information officer for the Springfield Fire Department
SPRINGFIELD — Nine people were hospitalized after a serious three-car crash near 187 Boston Road at about 2 p.m. Saturday, said Dennis G. Leger, executive aide to acting Springfield Fire Department Commissioner Joseph A. Conant.
"All were transported," Leger said, adding that one of the injured was a pedestrian who was walking along Boston Road at the time of the crash.
Authorities did not release the identities of the victims, whose conditions were not immediately available. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic extrication tool, to remove two people who were trapped inside a Ford Escape, Leger said. Five people in a Mitsubishi Eclipse and a man in a Mazda sedan also were injured, he said.
The injured pedestrian told authorities he was hit by a flying car part from the multi-car collision, Leger said.
The crash happened along Boston Road between roughly Shelby Motorcars and the Springfield City Library branch in Pine Point, just east of Pine Point center. "It was a very horrible accident. It was a mess," an employee at Shelby Motorcars said.
No one was charged in connection with the crash, which remains under investigation, according to Springfield Police Lt. James Rosso
