SPRINGFIELD – The city’s Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management is warning the public to stay off all ponds and lakes in Springfield, due to unsafe ice conditions.
As a result recent warm weather and the presence of underground streams in most of the city’s lakes and ponds, a thick enough layer of ice has not formed for safe skating, the department stated.
A layer of snow covering the ice can give a false sense of safety, and the department encourages all parents and guardians to educate their children on the danger of unsafe ice and to heed the warning signs.
A copy of the department’s Ice Safety Brochure is on the website: www.springfieldcityhall.com/park by clicking on “ice safety” in the left hand column.
For information for ice safety conditions, residents may call the Recreation Division at (413) 787-6434.
