Russell Adams, driver in collision with PVTA bus, arraigned on charges in Springfield District Court

Adams was ordered held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail and is due back in court on June 21.

SPRINGFIELD - The driver of a Jeep Cherokee that collided with a PVTA bus Tuesday afternoon on Liberty Street near the Interstate 291 exit was arraigned in Springfield District Court on charges he tried to flee the scene following the accident.

Russell Adams, 49, of Springfield, was charged with fleeing the scene of a personal injury accident, failure to stop at an intersection, driving with a suspended licence, subsequent offense, receiving stolen property and trespassing on state property.

Adams denied the charges at his district court arraignment on Wednesday.

He was ordered held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail and is due back in court on June 21 for a pre-trial hearing.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on Liberty Street near the Armory Street rotary. Adams' vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee came off the exit of I-291 and collided with a PVTA bus. Several passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment and traffic at the rotary was tied up while the scene was cleared.

According to state police, Adams tried to run away after the accident, but he was spotted running and chased down by a state trooper.
