Break-ins have also been reported in Amherst, Northampton, Southampton and Southwick.

EASTHAMPTON -- Police urge residents here and in surrounding communities to be vigilant as they continue to probe a recent rash of residential break-ins.

Sgt. Mark Popielarczyk said police are working to see if a break-in suspect reportedly arrested in Amherst yesterday can be linked to break-ins elsewhere, including Easthampton, Southampton, Northampton and Southwick.

“We are sharing information with many departments,” Popielarczyk said.

Amherst police were not immediately available for comment on the arrest.

Amherst blogger Larry Kelley, citing scanner communications, reported that police arrested a break-in suspect Thursday afternoon on West Bay Road near the Eric Carle Museum. Kelley photographed police searching the van driven by the suspect, which allegedly contained some of the stolen items.

The suspect or suspects strike quickly during the daytime hours and target such things as televisions and laptops. “We are just asking the public to call if they see anything suspicious,” Popielarczyk said.

Forced-entry break-ins have been reported this week on Hendrick and Torrey streets, Popielarczyk said.
