Community members can obtain the free cable-style gun lock at the department at any time.

Several years ago, the Monson police department also offered free gun locks to local residents.

AMHERST -- The Amherst Police Department announced Thursday that it is providing free gun locks to any community member who needs them.

The announcement comes as the debate about gun safety took center stage in Washington Wednesday. Closer to home, Amherst police officials said they are offering the gun locks with the hope of keeping people in the community -- especially children -- safe.

“With the hunting season upon us, gun owners are reminded that Massachusetts General Laws require all firearms to be locked when not under the owner’s immediate control,” a press release from the department reads.

The department is hoping “to encourage gun owners to practice safe and responsible gun ownership and storage.”

Community members can obtain the free cable-style gun lock at the department at any time, according to the release.

Sgt. Brian Daly is available to answer questions about the program at (413) 259-3000 or dalyb@amherstma.gov.
