A man was taken to Baystate Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation.
SOUTH HADLEY -- Investigators probing a Tuesday evening house fire that sent a Granby Road man to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment of smoke inhalation do not believe the blaze is suspicious.
“At this point in time we do not believe it is arson,” said Capt. Thomas Stark of Fire District 1. The man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, he said.
The victim, the sole occupant of the home at 335 Granby Road, called in the blaze shortly after 6 p.m. Arriving firefighters spotted smoke coming from the rear of the building, Stark said.
Firefighters, aided by their counterparts in Fire District 2, quickly knocked down the blaze, Stark said, adding that he did not yet have a damage estimate.
“It’s not a complete loss by any stretch of the imagination,” he said.
A cat perished in the fire, Capt. James Pula, also of Fire District 1, said Tuesday night.
Pula said the living room area was significantly burned with the fire eating through the floor and causing damage to the cellar. The rest of the house received heat and smoke damage.
The fire department and the state Fire Marshal’s Office continue to investigate the fire.
According to the Hampshire District of Register of Deeds website, the property is owned by John Halama.
