SPRINGFIELD -- A 42-year-old city man shot multiple times on Monmouth Street early Wednesday was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center.
Police are withholding the identity of the man shot pending notification of family members.
Sgt. John M. Delaney said the victim was found on the ground near the street in front of 64 Monmouth St. in the city’s McKnight neighborhood.
Neighborhood residents reported hearing 4 or 5 shots at about 5:40 a.m. Delaney, aide to Commissioner William J. Fitchet, said the victim was pronounced dead at about 6:30 a.m.
The shooting death marks the city’s second homicide for 2013.
Detectives under the direction of Captain Thomas Trites are working on the case and following leads. A section of Monmouth Street remained cordoned off mid-morning.
