AMHERST — Police arrested two people during the annual Extravaganja event Saturday, including a 24-year-old Greenfield man who allegedly assaulted a police officer.

Lt. Ronald Young said the officer was not seriously injured and remained on duty. “He got banged up a little, but he is fine,” Young said.

The suspect, Dylan D. Dresser, 24, of 93 High St., Apt. 4, Greenfield, had been acting erratically on South Pleasant Street, obstructing traffic and reaching into vehicles, Young said.

When the bicycle patrol officer arrived on scene, the suspect “charged over and kicked the bike,” Young said.

The 22nd annual, event, held from noon to 6:30 p.m., attracted approximately 6,000 people. “This is probably the largest crowd that we have ever seen,” Young said. “It was a big crowd, we really couldn’t have fit any more on the town common. It tapped our resources.”

The event, sponsored by the Cannabis Reform Coalition (CRC) at the University of Massachusetts, advocates for the full legalization of marijuana.

A dozen people were issued citations for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, Young said.

Police also responded to calls for medical assistance, other unruly attendees and parking and traffic complaints.

Dresser was charged with malicious destruction of property over $250, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer.

The second man arrested, Rafael Perez, 24, of 72 Essex St., Apt. 8, in Holyoke, was charged with a Holyoke District Court warrant for receiving a stolen motor vehicle and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
