AMHERST- A University of Massachusetts student from Wilbraham is organizing a 2.62-mile run on the Amherst campus tonight to raise money for victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.
The runners are to gather at 6 p.m. on the plaza between the Mullins Center and the practice skating rink with the run starting off at 6:30 p.m. according to a press release.
Christopher J. Weyant, 19, a sports management student, is organizing the event to show the people of Boston that the UMass Amherst community supports them and “to show the perpetrators of these horrific attacks that we will overcome adversity and peace is the best ally,” according to the release.
The event is part of the informal #RunForBoston, in which people are running the distance that many runners were short of the finish line when the marathon was ended.
No registration is required and runners are encouraged to wear yellow and blue T-shirts, the signature colors of the Boston Athletic Association, the sponsors of the Boston Marathon.
Student volunteers will collect donations that will go to The One Fund Boston, to be administered by Kenneth Feinberg, a UMass Amherst alumnus who administered the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund.
UMass football head coach Charley Molnar, an avid runner himself, is offering those competing at the marathon a chance to “Cross The Finish Line” at the Minutemen’s Spring Game at McGuirk Alumni Stadium which begins at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Those runners will be able to take a lap around the field, cross the finish line and be presented a gift on behalf of the UMass football program.
