Multiple emergency agencies were called to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation site on North King Street in Northampton Thursday morning, after three people reportedly became trapped under a trailer.
UPDATE, 1:38 p.m.: One person was killed in the accident, according to the Massachusetts State Police. Two others were rescued. The Northwestern District Attorney's Office is investigating. A new story is available here.
UPDATE, 12:47 p.m.: Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan is at the site of the incident. A vehicle from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner arrived at the site but left after a short time, according to a reporter for The Republican who is at the scene.
UPDATE, 12:38 p.m.: The Massachusetts State Police media relations unit released this statement about the incident, which indicates that there were three victims:
"Today at 10:05 a.m., Troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Northampton Barracks responded to the Department of Transportation property located at 811 N. King Street in Northampton for a report of three workers trapped underneath a portable construction housing unit. Troopers assigned to the Hampshire Franklin County District Attorney’s Office are also on scene. The State Police Office of Media Relations will provide more information as it becomes available."The story below has been updated to reflect that number of victims.
NORTHAMPTON -- Multiple emergency agencies were called to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation site on North King Street in Northampton Thursday morning, after three people reportedly became trapped under a trailer.
According to emergency personnel on the scene, the trailers are each 50 feet long and about 10 feet wide. They are arranged side by side behind the building and had been intended for use as additional office space.
A dispatcher from the Northampton Fire Department confirmed that the situation was ongoing at 10:30 a.m., but declined to provide additional information.
State police said troopers assigned to the Northampton barracks responded to the 811 North King St. facility at 10:05 a.m. for a report of three workers trapped underneath a portable construction housing unit. Troopers assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office also responded.
As of 11:50 a.m., more than 50 public safety officials were at the scene along with a large crane that had not yet been set up to help lift the trailers off of the victims.
Although the condition of the victims isn't clear, the LifeFlight helicopter was requested to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
