The fire, reported Sunday afternoon, caused heavy damage to the business.
SPRINGFIELD -- Firefighters were summoned Monday morning to the apparent rekindling of a fire that caused heavy damage to a Paridon Street woodworking shop Sunday.
The original blaze, which broke out shortly after 2 p.m., was caused by sparks thrown when a worker, cutting a piece of barn board, apparently hit a nail, said Dennis Leger, aide to Commissioner Joseph Conant.
“They saw the fire and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher and it got away,” Leger said, adding that wind was a factor in the blaze.
Although there were initial reports that people were trapped inside the building, that did not appear to be so, Leger said. No injuries were reported.
Minutes after the Paridon Street fire, firefighters were summoned to a house fire at 72 Melville St. Leger said that blaze, which may have started in the garage, damaged several other homes thanks to embers carried by strong winds.
The rear porch and the roof at 67 Victoria St. were damaged as well as a shed, a garage, a porch and a Jeep at 71 Victoria St.
The fire caused $100,000 in damage, Leger said, adding that the Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad continues to investigate.
Firefighters also responded to five brush fires between 1:30 and 4 p.m. The fires were at 129 Beacon Circle, 465 North Branch Highway, 384 Grayson Drive and two at 1540 Boston Road.
Firefighters from other communities assisted in extinguishing the brush fires because there were so many at the same time.
